10 Tools Every Gardener Should Have
For many, gardening can be a wonderful hobby and a great form of therapy. Getting in the dirt, getting back to nature, and the beautiful results of all your hard work are all great reasons why so many take up gardening.
If this will be your first year tackling the garden, it is a good idea to start by identifying which tools you will need to start breakin ground and gettin dirty!
1. Gardening Gloves
These are important to have, even if you enjoy the feel of dirt! I recommend purchasing two pairs and washing them every other time they are used. Gardening gloves are designed to protect your hands and lower arms from bug bites and from fungus that you may find outside. They are also great when you accidentally touch poison ivy or prickly thorns! I would recommend finding some with a palm grip of some sort because you will be dealing with water, pots, and tools and these grips will keep your hands from slipping.
2. Bulb Planter
Bulb planters are designed to plant your bulbs at the exact depth they need to be at. Planting bulbs too close to the surface or too deep could mess up bulb growth and development. The planter makes your holes nice a neat and help you better space out your plants.
3. Gardening Hoe
This tool will really come in handy during the start of your garden. It is used to break up and prepare the soil for planting and makes a great weeder!
4. Shovel
A shovel is an absolute must-have. It’s great for digging big holes, spreading soil, and removing bushes or big rocks.
5. Wheel Barrel
When all your tools are in the garage and the garden is in the backyard, a wheel barrel will become your new best friend. It’s also great for moving soil, big plants, and carting your little helper back up to the house!
6. Rake
This tools isn’t only the best thing to have around in the fall, it’s also great for smoothing out soil or dirt.
7. Hand Shovel
A little hand-held shovel will help you with just about everything. It’ll help pull out little, delicate plants, plant seeds, pull weeds, and so much more.
8. Water Hose w/ Spray Nossle
I don’t think this one needs much explanation!
9. Pruner
Pruners are used to cut thin branches, shrubs, roses, and thicker vines. They come in several different sizes and it is best to have a small hand-held one and a larger one.
10. Shears/Scissors
This is like a pruner in theory but is used to trim herbs, flowers, and very thin vines and stems. It’s also great to have when opening the potting soil bags and miracle grow bags!
** Gardening shears should be used for gardening only!
